Mast Confusion is a Hunter 356 sailboat built in 2002. She replaces our old boat Kwoletee Tyme which is a 1982, 31 foot Allmand that we had owned since 1984. Kwoletee Tyme is now in the good hands of Tom & Mary Lou Lytle. They seem to be having as much fun with her as we did. We hope she serves them well. Visit the Lytle's on their web site www.kwoleteetyme.com Our new boat shown below in the artists rendering was delivered to the dealer on April 24th. We took possession in mid May and after some equipment was installed and some problems resolved, we sailed her away from the dealer on June 26, 2002. Let The New Adventures Begin! But First.......... Where the Heck Did the Name Come From? |

Racing.. or why am I doing this?
Race 1
Well
it appears my new friends at the Amelia Island Sailing Club like to
race. You might even say they are possessed, when it comes to racing.
Well I have never participated in sailboat racing so I decided I might
as well give it a shot.
The 1st race is an ocean race, 13 miles from St. Mary's Inlet to the buoy off of Nassau Sound and back. A total of 26 miles.

The reports are short & concise; "Hurricane Frances is coming to the Sunshine State."
This
report is totally indifferent to the fact that the Amelia Island
Sailing Club (AISC) is planning a cruise to St. Augustine at the same
time Frances is calling. Okay for the 2nd time this year we strip the
canvas off the boat, double the dock lines and decide to wait the storm
out.
What to do in the mean time? Capt. Butch, our cruise
director, who by the way can always be counted on as a boredom
eliminator, suggests a Hurricane Party with Force 4 Hurricane Punch for
all. He even suggests a prize for the best concocted Hurricane Punch.

It is April 3, 2004 and
Mast Confusion is ready to be moved from Whitney's Marine in Orange
Park, Florida to it's new home at the Amelia Island Yacht Basin in
Fernandina Beach. The weather in CT is cold and wet, down here it is
warm and sunny.
The truck ride down from CT was
uneventful, a good thing, and Whitney's has done an excellent job
rigging her and installing a new air conditioning system. It is 7:00 AM
and we slipped the last line, slowly back out of the slip, turning the
boat up the St. John's River.
Our 1st bridge has a vertical
clearance of 65 feet, no problem, Mast Confusion only has a mast height
of 45 feet. As we slip under the bridge, my crew, Larry, Bob & Ron
lean out from under the bimini, look up and and suddenly develop a
worried look on their face. They wince as we go under, and then the
discussion centers on the fact that Mast Confusion clearly has a mast
taller than 45 feet. In unison they explain how little clearance we
had. I explain their fears were unfounded, we had plenty of clearance
and their inexperience passing under bridges was caused by a depth
perception. My crew clearly disagrees with me and open their 1st beer.
It is 8:00 AM.
